Cuzco 2011
Introduction
Theorganization Reach out and Learn visited us at BYU Idaho and invited our department to participate in an International Public Health Conference as well as community projects for some indigenous villages. The conference was taught in Cuzco. I was asked to teach two courses: the first covered the challenges we faced working with indigenous groups in Paraguay, The second was class on ergonomics and preventing injuries while lifting.
On the two days we weren't involved in the conference we visited two indigenous villages. At the first village we visited a school and with the help of many children, we built them a chicken coop for the the school. We also conducted a needs assessment of the village. The second village was named Ccoyllorpuqio. We drove up to 13000 feet and found the road washed out so we had to hike the remainder of the road carrying all our supplies. We built another chicken coop, conducted a water assessment and taught a personal hygiene class to the children.
