Project #7 - Water Quality

​    We had the goal of testing water quality in Abundancia, we also wanted to show them how to make Water Pasteurization Indicators (WAPIS) to pasteurize their water without having to use as much fuel.

     Water samples were collected from the Abundancia water supply and tested for bacteria using plate tests.  17 tests were performed, two at the school one at the church, 13 semi-random houses and boiled water as a control.  The cistern at the school, the filtered water at the church, as well as 3 cisterns in the community registered high bacterial counts. The cisterns at the other houses fell within expected normal levels. We are currently working on recommendations to clean those places where the samples were elevated.   We held a meeting with the community and shared the results of the testing. We talked about boiling water and an alternative way of knowing water is clean by using a WAPI. Then we spent time helping each family make their WAPIS.
