Abundancia 2010
Project #4 - Solar Ovens
In order to reduce the amount of wood that is used in the community we looked at the idea of solar ovens. We contacted BYU Provo and got a good design that had been used in other parts of South America. We practiced the design several time in Idaho which has a lot less solar value than Paraguay. We were able to cook entire meals. However when we got to Paraguay we had a difficult time locating all the materials to make the ovens namely the proper plastic bags. We taught them how to prepare the bottles, and make the solar ovens. They participated and learned how to do it. However when it was time to cook we did not have the right kind of bag so the cooking failed miserably. I doubt they will try it again unless we could show them the with the right kinds of bags. If this is tried a gain we should spend more time in Asuncion to look for the right bags.
